There’s a reason Alice Walker’s 1982 novel The Color Purple has spawned so many stageplays, films, and other iterations of the story. It’s because the mix of heartbreak and hope experienced by protagonist Celie transcends time, race, and life experiences. Everyone who walks alongside Celie can’t help but become transfixed by her, whether it’s through the written word or through a captivating performance. If you’re unfamiliar with Celie’s story, grab your ticket now to The Color Purple at Signature Theatre.

This musical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book infuses the narrative with even more color thanks to a score inspired by blues, ragtime, jazz, and gospel. The story begins with a teenage Celie being forced into an abusive marriage that separates her from her sister, a beacon of comfort and strength for the young girl. It follows Celie over the ensuing decades as she suffers greatly at the hands of her husband and society, but also finds hope and joy on a journey of self-discovery. Note that this show is not recommended for children due to some of its themes and content.
